The Story of "90s":

“We seek the things we used to know,
To keep some sense of self-control,
And hope for something new
In this rewinding”
(Jer Coons - “90s”)

In the mid-2020s, a man in his mid-30s is releasing a song about the mid-90s that sounds like the mid-2000s. Confused yet?

That makes two of us.

Vermont songwriter Jer Coons last released solo material in 2009, which was of course many moons ago, and also just yesterday.

Time has a funny way of sneaking up on you like that.

Having spent the better part of the early aughts as a “acoustic-pop troubadour and teen heartthrob cut from a cloth similar to that of cheese merchants John Mayer [and] Jason Mraz”, (Dan Bolles, Seven Days) Jer traded in the acoustic guitar for a slew of other instruments; from MPC drum machines and analog synths to lap steel guitars and mandolins in pursuit of something—anything—other than himself.

This culminated in a fruitful extended period as a versatile producer and sideman, with extensive touring (Caroline Rose, Madaila) and acclaimed studio collaborations in genres ranging from folk, americana, hip hop, indie, punk, and country to psychedelic pop.

But all the while - through highs, lows and whoas - Jer never stopped writing his own material, with thousands of melodies, lyrical scraps and abandoned demos held hostage within notebooks and hard drives, lost to the sands of time.

That is, until now.

In 2024, Jer prepares to release a brand new batch of sad pop bangers, entitled Songs I Wish You Heard. It’s the culmination of a decade-plus of love and loss, the hard fought lessons from a world on fire, and well, the story of finally growing up - the album is a collection of intimate anthems that will pull your heart strings and plant themselves in your ears with equal measure. Unabashedly Pop (capital "P") and unabashedly himself (lowercase "h").

The debut single “90s” (arriving fittingly on groundhog day 2024) is a blast from the past, a return to form and a reckoning with the cyclical nature of trends that serves as both a visceral critique and a vivid celebration of nostalgia in its many forms.

But beyond that, it’s mostly just another catchy ass Pop song.

Because sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

Here is a list of why this song is relevant in our current era:

LYRICS:

Everything reminds me of the 90s
Tried my best to put my past behind me
Maybe cheap nostalgia will define me
For the time being
But that's easier than finding
You remind me of the 90s

Let this be a letter back to sender
Do it all the same, but better
Nothing's quite as good as we remember
Even if it's true, whatever

Nostalgia's such a drug no wonder
We withdraw from the flood that we're under
More bad news with questionable timing

All I see are totems of my youth
In different uses
And keeping up with anything
Is useless

We seek the things we used to know
To keep some sense of self-control
And hope for something new
In this rewinding

Everything reminds me of the 90s
Tried my best to put my past behind me
Maybe cheap nostalgia will define me
For the time being
But that's easier than finding
You remind me of the 90s

Is this a routine or a reflection?
There's no point in this obsession
Guess the culture's growing older
And amnesiacs took over

But what a trip it's been
My childhood friends
We're getting closer
End up going everywhere
And wind up getting nowhere

All I see are photos in a lower resolution
And I still don't know what the f***
I'm doing
I get that this is growing up
Why's it got me feeling stuck?
'Cause luck is just attempts with
Perfect timing

Everything reminds me of the 90s
Tried my best to put my past behind me
Maybe cheap nostalgia will define me
For the time being
You remind me of the
You remind me of the 90s
